The Devonport Trail

< The group meets outside the (locked) gates to Seymour House < The groups marches up on to the new mast at Mount Wise and Nigel tells us where we're going today

< The mast gives you a good prospect over Devonport - including the three tower blocks, nearly painted

Looking the other way, a spectacular view towards the Royal William Victualling Yard >

And then we leave the mast... >

...and walk down towards the Scott Memorial >

< This memorial to Robert Falcon Scott ("Scott of the Antarctic") has been recently cleaned and gets a close inspection

< Walking back through the streets of Devonport we glimpse Foulston's Guildhall... <...and then the Old Chapel - now Plymco

The second walk to take us near to the old Devonport Library >

Then back down towards the Guildhall, passing Foulston's Egyptian House... >

...the site of the old Ker Street School... >

< ... complete with plaque to mark the opening < Towering over it all is the Devonport Column, sadly locked. It commemorates Plymouth Dock becoming Devonport < And opposite, in the bowels of the Guildhall, the current Devonport Library.

Another reminder that Devonport is quite a new town >

Someone suggests we go and have a look inside the Egyptian House, now a club. Not everyone is keen >

Whatever you think of the building, that doorway is spectacular >

< While the back of the Guildhall has its own modest charms < Devonport, a town of contrasts - tower block and green fields < And bad housing

This was the worst housing in evidence - the windows are rotting and tenants are living here >

Some flats have been modernized, however, such as these in Pembroke Street >

We arrive at Mutton Cove - again - and enjoy a sit down in the warm September sunshine >

< Looking towards the new Mount Wise pools < Along Richmond Walk, and we find the remains of the old L&SWR Stonehouse Pool branch < A glimpse of Stonehouse Bridge

Nigel points out the fortifications on Devonport Hill >

One group member catches the bus home >
