Notes

Note
Cotton, Nathaniel ‎(1705-1788)‎, poet and physician, was born in London to Samuel Cotton, a Levant merchant. No record of his birth survives, although a Nathaniel Cotton, son of Samuel and Mary Cotton, was baptized on 12 March 1706 in Bull Lane Independent Chapel, Stepney.

Cotton trained as a physician in Leiden, under Hermann Boerhaave. He matriculated as a medical student on 23 September 1729, and graduated MD on 7 August 1730.

About 1738 Cotton married Anne Pembroke ‎(d. 1749)‎. They had seven children, five of whom survived infancy, including Joseph Cotton ‎(1745-1825)‎. About 1740 Cotton's practice moved to St Albans, where he kept a private madhouse called the Collegium insanorum on Dagnall Street near the abbey, and lived with his family on St Peter's Street. One of his patients at the Collegium was the poet William Cowper.

After his wife's death in 1749, on 22 August 1751 Cotton married Hannah Everett ‎(d. 1772)‎, and with her had a son, John, and two daughters, Elizabeth and an infant.

Following his second wife's death in 1772 Cotton remained a widower. He died at St Albans on 2 August 1788, and was buried with his wives in St Peter's churchyard, St Albans.
