Wivenhoe 1841 census index

This is a virtually complete name index to the 1841 census of Wivenhoe, Essex (HO/107/334/13). One name has had to be omitted because it is illegible due an ink blot, and one individual has been omitted because the census enumerator did not know his name.

The parish of Wivenhoe

In 1841 the parish of Wivenhoe was in the Colchester Division of the Lexden Hundred of Essex. It was in the Superintendent Registrar's district of Lexden and Winstree.

The parish was divided into three enumeration districts:

Enumeration District 4 - Folios 4 to 12

"All that part of the parish of Wivenhoe which lies to the north east, and west of the mansion of W. Brummell Esq., comprising the Mill, the Cross, the Heath, General Rebow's Park and all to the northward of the Colchester road."

Enumeration District 5 - Folios 15 to 28

"All that part of the parish of Wivenhoe comprising the west side of the road commencing at Wivenhoe Hall and extending southward to the Waterside."

Enumeration District 6 - Folios 35 to 48

"All that part of the parish of Wivenhoe comprising the east side of the road commencing at the mansion of William Brummell Esq., comprising the Mill, the Heath, General Rebow's Park and all to the northward of the Colchester road."

Editorial policy

Unlike later censuses for Wivenhoe, the names in the 1841 census display a level of illiteracy on the part of the householder and the enumerator. Where a more orthodox spelling is obvious or known from the parish registers I have substituted it for that given in the census. Where the original spelling is particularly unusual or hard to read I have included it in round parentheses after my best guess at the name. Where the name is not given, I have used a form of words in square brackets.
